Call for Papers: 19th IPHS Conference 4-6 July 2022

CITY SPACE TRANSFORMATION: RESILIENT URBAN ENVIRONMENTS

The 19th biennial International Planning History Society (IPHS) conference will take place 4–6 July 2022. It will be convened by Professor Alexey Krasheninnikov and hosted by the Moscow Architectural Institute, Russia. The conference language will be English.

Due to the global circumstances created by the COVID-19 pandemic, the conference will take a virtual format to maximise the opportunity for IPHS members and others to participate.

If individuals are able to travel to Moscow at the time of the conference, they may contact the conference convenor regarding assistance with visas, accommodation options and the potential to participate in local field trips. However, visitors will need to make their own arrangements to participate virtually in the conference.

A conference registration fee will be charged. IPHS members and student delegates will be eligible for a discounted rate.

The conference program will consist of diverse events including keynote lectures and the Gordon Cherry Memorial Lecture, presentations in parallel sessions and roundtables, sessions for PhD candidates and early career scholars, book talks, and the announcement of the recipients of the 2022 IPHS Prizes and Awards.

City Space Transformation: Resilient Urban Environments

The 19th IPHS conference aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of the history of urban planning and design focused on the theme of the resilient urban environment explored from the perspectives of both transformation and stability of urban structure.

Urban planning policy determines the strategy, goals and objectives of the urban development of territories. In the last decade, we have seen a gradual transition from construction in new territories to reconstruction, redevelopment, and an increase in the efficiency of already built-up sites. In this regard, development does not always mean increasing the volume (Urban development), but rather it also means the preservation (Sustainable development) and adaptation (Urban resilience) of the urban fabric. Such a change in focus of attention is supported by urban planning history and theory and applied research.

The 2022 conference calls for contributions investigating a broad range of topics relating to the theme of City Space Transformation: Resilient Urban Environments. Papers should address the theme in historical and, as relevant, other perspectives. They may cover topics including urban form, urban visions, comprehensive planning, planning legacy and heritage, cross-cultural exchange and colonization, and the concept and methodology of global/world planning history.

Due date for submission of abstracts of papers and proposals for parallel sessions and roundtables: 15 December 2021
